README for SuSE 9.1 Professional (x86_64) libdvdcss, xine-lib and xine-ui RPM builds. Introduction ================================= SuSE 9.1 Professional does not ship with DVD playback ability, and so these RPMs have been built to enable the SuSE 9.1 Professional x86_64 user to watch DVD's on their system. I have in no way contributed any code or programming skills to the author(s) of the respective software titles. I saw a need for these x86_64 RPMs...they weren't readily available on the internet...so I built them for all to enjoy. Preparing Your System ================================= If you have not yet installed SuSE 9.1 Professional for you x86_64 system, it is wise to deselect the installation of the xine software that comes "in the box." It's a step you won't have to undo later. 1. If you already have your SuSE 9.1 system up and running, run YaST and click on "Install and Remove Software" under the "Software" section. A new window pops up allowing you to browse software titles. 2. Near the top of the window you will see a Filter: selection bar. Select "Search", and in the search text pane, type xine and then click on the Search button. 3. Uninstall xine-devel, xine-extra, xine-lib. You can keep xine-ui if you want to use the version that comes with SuSE 9.1 Professional. It will flash that DVDs will not work on the title screen (but no pop-ups), but it does still play DVD's. Otherwise, also uninstall xine-ui. 4. That's it, your system is ready for the install of the DVD playing versions of Xine for SuSE 9.1 x86_64. Installing the RPMs ================================= At your console, enter the following commands. This MUST be done at the console, as YaST will not install these RPMs for some reason (who knows, maybe they blocked libdvdcss and dvd-enabled xine versions.) Also note that you should install the RPMs in the order shown, replacing /path/to/rpm/ with the actual path of the RPMs you downloaded. # rpm -iv /path/to/rpm/libdvdcss2-1.2.8-0.pm.2.x86_64.rpm # rpm -iv /path/to/rpm/libxine1-1_rc5-0.x86_64.rpm (the following is if you uninstalled xine-ui earlier or did not install it during SuSE 9.1 installation) # rpm -iv /path/to/rpm/xine-ui-0.99.2-1.x86_64.rpm That's it, you're done! Notes ================================= 1. If you use the SuSE provided xine-ui, you will find the link to xine in the panel menu under Multimedia>Video Player>Xine. Once again, you need to note that a message will be displayed in the windows that movies files are played in that says DVDs will not work. IGNORE this message and play your DVDs anyway...it works. 2. If you decided not to use the SuSE provided xine-ui, you need to run the xine command from a console, or link xine to wherever you desire. 3. These RPMs were built on an AMD64 Athlon FX-51 system running SuSE 9.1 Professional (x86_64,) so they may not work for other x86_64 distributions. If you decide to try them anyway, please let me know wether or not they work on your system. 4. These are actual 64-bit packages built directly from source. They are NOT 32-bit, and thus will not work on 32-bit versions of Linux. 5. Totem seems to be working just fine after performing this installion, but Kaffiene does not. It still gives the "can't play DVDs" messages. Troubleshooting =============== If you have problems installing or can't get these RPMs to work, please let me know at englands@phoenixcable.net.
